Academic Integrity among Engineering Undergraduates: Six Years of Research

چکیده
The E Team (Exploring Ethical decision-making in Engineering) is a group of engineering educators and educational researchers who have worked collaboratively since 2000 to understand the underlying causes of academic dishonesty in engineering undergraduate populations. The team was especially motivated by decades of others’ work showing that, when surveyed, engineering students were among those most likely to report frequently cheating. This paper summarizes some of the team’s more important findings from three major studies that surveyed a total of 1300 engineering and humanities undergraduates at eleven institutions. The paper also describes the next phase of the team’s research and presents implications of that work for engineering education.

متن کاملComparative Study of the Academic Vocabulary Content of Electronic Engi-neering Corpora, GE Materials and M.S. Entrance Examinations
The importance of vocabulary learning has been underlined in the field of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) because non-English majors who require reading English texts in their fields of study have to expand their English vocabulary knowledge much more efficiently than ordinary ESL/EFL learners. Since academic vocabulary instruction in Iranian universities is realized through the use of Gene...
متن کاملThe Implications of Academic Dishonesty in Undergraduate Engineering on Professional Ethical Behavior
Student academic dishonesty, commonly referred to as cheating, has become a serious problem at institutions of higher education. This is particularly true of engineering students who, according to previous research, are among the most likely to cheat in college. In addition, research on college students in all fields has indicated that such behavior is more common among students who participate...
متن کاملA Longitudinal Study of the Ethical Development of Engineering and Non-engineering Students at a National Research University
Context Recent national reports (National Academy of Engineering, 2003; National Academy of Engineering, 2004; National Academy of Engineering, 2005) highlight the importance of promoting the development of ethical behavior among undergraduates. Academic dishonesty (i.e., cheating) provides one measure of ethical behavior, and it is particularly problematic on college campuses, with upwards of ...
